You want a device that is apartment-friendly and compact for the street musician; but also something that is quality-sounding. A gritty, raw, 'break-able' kit for gigging in clubs that you can fit in a cab. Breakbeats by Questlove does it all.

Make it fit
Breakbeats was designed with the city in mind. Positioned on a riser for optimum reach, its compact 14x16" bass drum, 7x10" tom, and 13x13" floor tom creates a set-up for sculpting grooves in tight spaces.
Break it down
The tonal center of Breakbeats is a 5x14" matching wood snare drum. Create beats on the fly and make your voice heard at gigs, on the street, or in rehearsal.
Dial it in
Fitted with Remo heads, Breakbeats' 7-ply hardwood shells play like a full-sized kit; fusing low-end kick punch with focused tom and snare midrange.
Pack it up
Packable, stackable, and portable, Breakbeats' compact size and included velvet storage bags make it ideal for the drummer on the move. Play it wide open or instantly change volume and tone by draping each bag over each drum.
Shell and Bearing Edge
Shells are made of 7-ply hardwood, preferred by professionals for its tonal versatility. Each drum's bearing edge is cut to a 45-degree angle within 1/16" from the outside edge. This sharp edge is hand-sanded to the craftsman's touch to assure a smooth, even, flat surface for easy head seating; the final touch to complete the unmistakable Ludwig Sound.

Snare stand, cymbals and cymbal stands not included.

  • An affordable jazz kit for tight spaces

I bought the Ludwig Breakbeats kit for occasions when I play two consecutive jazz gigs across town from each other, with an hour or less between them—one of which is outdoors in punishing heat, humidity, and possible rain. The quality of the Breakbeats (shell wood, bearing edges, hardware, appearance) does not approach that of my Ludwig Classic Maple kits, but I did not expect it to: the entire Breakbeats shell pack costs less than a fine snare drum. I dislike sparkle finishes, but of the three wraps offered the black seems the most professional. I looked at other miniature jazz kits but found the Breakbeats to be the most practical. I especially appreciate the full-size 14” snare drum: the 13” snare included in other small kits produces a weak rim click. I have played Ludwig since 1963, but I prefer Remo Diplomat FiberSkyn heads. Since the 16” bass-drum heads were available only on special order, I had to wait several weeks before I could use the drums. The Breakbeats kit sounds quite good for quiet music and will work in any small space. The flimsy lift supplied with the bass drum causes my DW 6000 pedal beater to strike the head off center no matter how the drum is positioned and can cause the pedal chain to strike the counterhoop; I will replace it with a Gibraltar SC-BDPM lift such as I use on my 20”. The Breakbeats tom-tom holder can accommodate a cymbal boom, and I will use one for the ride cymbal if it appears that the thin bass-drum shell will support it safely (the Ludwig boom I ordered months ago has not yet arrived). The cloth drawstring bags that come with the Breakbeats may be useful as dust covers or mufflers in the home, but as gig bags or theft deterrents in the workplace they are worthless; I replaced them with Humes & Berg Galaxy bags (I use a dark king-size bedsheet to cover my unattended drums on the gig). Overall, the Ludwig Breakbeats kit is an appropriate backup to a superior jazz drum set.

Two brothers, William F. and Theo Ludwig, developed a bass drum pedal in 1909 that could play fast, forming "Ludwig and Ludwig."  Ringo Starr’s use of a Ludwig drumset in the 60’s made the brand well- known. Today, the "Most Famous Name On Drums and Percussion" offers a full line of drumsets, concert & marching drums, plus quality hardware.
