The Collector's Series Icon Snare Drums were created by DW Drum Designer John Good as a way of paying tribute to some of the most legendary drummers in Rock & Roll history. This new line of snare drums honors icons such as Neil Peart of Rush, Roger Taylor of Queen, and Nick Mason of Pink Floyd. The snare drum sizes and shell configurations are exact replications of the drums each artist plays, but with one dramatic new design element. The finish is painstakingly laser-cut, then hand-inlayed from a variety of jaw-dropping exotic wood veneers and protected with a clear gloss lacquer.

Here we have the Nick Mason Icon Snare. As part of the legendary Pink Floyd, Mason helped shape not only the psychedelic movement of the 60's and 70's, but rock music as a whole. His metronomic skills kept a solid backbeat for classic tunes such as "Wish You Were Here", "Money", "Comfortably Numb", "Another Brick in the Wall", and many more. His contribution to popular music cannot be measured.

Much like the music of Pink Floyd, this Icon Series Snare is simply out of this world. It is constructed from a 10-ply Collector's Series Maple HVLT Shell. This is a Vertical Low Timbre styled shell with a horizontal outer ply for added strength and projection. The shell if finished in a Dyed Grey Birdseye Maple and features a stunning laser cut series of inlays that recreate the classic "Dark Side of the Moon" artwork. To give it this classic look, DW's master craftsmen hand laid a blend of Ebony, Natural Maple, and Dyed Basswood to the drum.

This snare also features DW's patented MAG throw-off and three point butt plate.  A purposefully simple design, the MAG is a workhorse drop throw-off with horizontal tension adjustment. It gets its name from a clever magnet that's integrated into the body of the throw-off. When the handle is in the upright position, it won’t release without a slight tug. When it does release, it throws the strainer completely off the head to avoid any strainer buzz. The innovative three-point butt plate, allows you to easily and accurately toggle between 3 different levels of strainer tension. This snare also features DW's classic dual turret lugs, True-Hoops, Tru-Tone snare wires, and True-Pitch tension rods. All of the hardware is plated in a black nickel finish to perfectly compliment the "Dark Side of The Moon" motif.

Now as cool as these drums are, there is something way cooler about them that we have yet to mention. With the Icon Series, DW allowed each artist to select a charity that would receive part of the profits from these signature drums. Nick Mason chose to donate to the Roundhouse's Children's Music Program which helps bring the gift of music to the underprivileged children of London.

Every model of the Icon Series Snare Drums are limited to a run of 250 pieces. Each one is numbered and comes with a snare drum bag, certificate of authenticity, and a legend that describes the woods used to craft these stellar drums.

The craftsmanship of this drum is incredible. The inlays are extremely precise - it's really impressive how detailed it is. I like the quilted look of the background color of this drum as well. All of the hardware is standard DW snare hardware, albeit in black nickel. The case that is included is very protective and rigid. Sound-wise, this will basically sound like any 14x6.5 DW maple snare, which is a great sound, but this drum is not exactly about the sound - the woodwork is the whole point. This is not an inexpensive drum by any means, but considering the limited quantity of this and the quality of the inlay work, the asking price is certainly justified.
