Mapex started the design of Armory with the idea that players want to spend more time playing and less time tuning their drums. The result is the SONIClear™ Bearing Edge, which increases the contact between the drumhead and shell and allows the head to sit flat on the edge, this produces a stronger and more centered pitch and makes the drums remarkably easy to tune.

The increased contact also enhances shell vibration, making the tonal nuances produced by different shell materials more prominent. The effect of the Armory Hybrid Shell, which uses a blend of maple and birch, is increased brilliance and projection on the rack toms and a fatter and darker punch from the floor toms and bass drum.

"The drum manufacturing community hasn't paid a lot of attention to the importance of bearing edges over the years. Specifically, players have had a difficult time tuning their drums and making them sound good because the apex of the edge is too far to the outside of the shell and they can't get the drumhead to sit flat", states Mike Robinson, Director of Marketing for KHS America. "That frustration can lead to a lack of enjoyment and less time playing. The SONIClear™ Bearing Edge solves those issues and enables players to get a great sound even without much tuning experience. This is a truly significant breakthrough that all our customers will benefit from."

However, Mapex didn't stop there. They've taken design innovations found on their premium line of Saturn IV drums and brought them into the mid-range to enhance the performance of this gig-quality series. The SONIClear™ rack tom suspension system and floor tom feet increase overall resonance by preserving vibration in the shell and drumheads and preventing the loss of energy that can make drums sound choked.

  • Mapex Armory Series Studioease Fast 6-Piece Drum Shell Pack - Fantastic Kit!
  • June 08, 2015

Mapex Armory Series Studioease Fast 6-Piece Drum Shell Pack - MAPEX Mfg # AR628SFUWT. I've had this drum kit for a few months now and couldn't be happier. As many other reviews have stated, this kit is a fantastic value for the money at the current price of just under Nine Hundred smackaroos and in my opinion it sounds fabulous. This is the "Fast" version of the kit, which means that it has the shallow-depth Rack & Floor Toms...10x7, 12x8, 14x12, 16x14 (diam.x depth), and an 18x22 virgin Bass Drum. So these Toms all have 1” less depth compared to “standard” sizes. I purchased the "Transparent Walnut" finish and it is stunning in person and looks to be a very high-quality finish. The Saturn IV style lugs and the rest of the hardware is much better than average. It is more like what I would expect to get on a high-end kit, and I really like the lug design. IMO, the Rack Tom suspension/mounting system is also the absolute best in this price range and even a lot of higher-end kits aren't this well-designed IMO. The SONIClear Bearing Edges do seem to allow these drums to have a wide tuning range and you can get a tone out of these drums when the head is just past finger-tight on the tension rods. They have a fat, warm sound with nice resonance that can of course be controlled by both how you tune the batter and resonant heads, and through dampening techniques. This kit does ship with the low-end Chinese-made REMO "UT" Ambassador Coated batter heads and clear reso heads, but they still sound quite good, IMO. This kit was purchased as a practice kit so I'm probably just going to wait until I've worn these heads a bit before I swap them out for the real-deal Remo's. I'm sure that these drums will sound even better with that minor change! I would agree with most reviewers as well that the standard 14x5.5 Tomahawk Snare drum that comes with this kit is quite good, and I also find it surprising that it is included at this price! The FREE Armory Snare Drum Trade-In Program is also a fantastic deal that offers a very wide selection of snare drums to choose from. You just have to pay for shipping your Tomahawk drum to Mapex and they will send you the replacement snare that you select with FREE shipping back to you. However, this offer is only available within the first 2 Weeks of your purchase, so act fast! I really thought that I would take advantage of the Trade-In program and switch to the Peacemaker snare, but I was satisfied enough with the Tomahawk. I would also want to try the other snares out in person before making that decision. Another factor was that I already have a good selection of metal and wood Snare Drums that I am happy with. And the other Armory Snare Drum models can all be had separately for about 260 USD, so if I really found one that I liked after trying it in person, it wouldn't be too expensive to buy separately, and possibly sell the Tomahawk if needed to recoup funds. I'm happy enough with the Tomahawk to use it as a side snare, and would be perfectly content using it as a main snare in most circumstances. The Tomahawk is a fairly sensitive snare with good snare wire buzz even at the edges of the head, and overall. It can also get quite loud and projects well when needed. Like any snare, you basically have limitless options to change the sound signature of the drum by switching heads, tuning it differently, and varied dampening. This drum kit was Drop-Shipped to me in the Los Angeles area directly from Mapex in Tennessee. And for my order in March of 2015 the cost for shipping was about 67 USD (Note that Cascio's FREE Shipping Offer is not available for Drum Kits specifically, so you will have to factor that into the total cost). It arrived within about 4 days to CA from TN, which is quite fast. The entire kit was shipped in 3 separate and quite large boxes, with the largest box of course being the Bass Drum with 1 Floor Tom & 1 Rack Tom nested inside. My only complaint would be that the packaging leaves A LOT to be desired. There is Very Little Cushioning or Protection inside the boxes, especially along the outer perimeter, top, bottom, and all sides. I was quite surprised at this, as I could imagine quite a bit of damage occurring on a regular basis during shipping, and a lot of extra time and money spent by Mapex to remedy damaged goods. I made sure to thoroughly inspect all of the contents very closely and luckily there was no obvious damage, which quite amazed me. So just be sure to check everything out carefully if you have this kit shipped to you! Other than that, I honestly believe this is the Best Value for your money in this price range! I believe that these Armory kits compare very favorably to other manufacture's offerings, some of which are at least double the price. For all-around features, quality, and sound, this Armory Kit is hard to beat! Hope this helps. Billy B.
