At the price I bought it for about six months ago, the LB400B chrome-over-brass cannot be beat -- add $150 or $200 and I'd still buy it. Tremendous presence, body, and cut; this baby came to play. Flawless workmanship, fit and finish exquisite. Came with the standard Ludwig "Medium" batter (which is actually Diplomat-weight), and if I was just a shade less heavy-handed I'd have left it on: Effortless rolls, complex patterns crystal clear and easy as falling off a log, and a sound to die for. But I am what I am, and it dented up after a few weeks (!) of normal playing. which says more about me than the head. Reluctantly replaced it with a Remo Coated Ambassador (no one in my town carries Ludwig heads, but I know from experience that the Ludwig "Heavy" Ambassador-weight head is just as good as the Remo). The Remo fit just fine and tuned up quick and easy. I'm superstitious about "never Mix, never worry" so I replaced the snare-side with a Remo hazy at the same time -- aces. You wanna kick some ass and/or indulge in subtle pianissimo stylings, this is your boy. I believe that's a COB Supra Morello's using on the early Brubeck solos, if you want an audio sample of what the Jazz end can do; but don't be fooled: this drum can be played as loud as you can hit it, without choking -- you will be heard, compadre, and it not only cuts but has that brass-shell "oomph" and body behind it , too. So, yeah -- I like it. A lot. Can't play it enough. Had my issues with Ludwig in the past, but this drum is a certified classic.

Two brothers, William F. and Theo Ludwig, developed a bass drum pedal in 1909 that could play fast, forming "Ludwig and Ludwig."  Ringo Starr’s use of a Ludwig drumset in the 60’s made the brand well- known. Today, the "Most Famous Name On Drums and Percussion" offers a full line of drumsets, concert & marching drums, plus quality hardware.
