Fancy Pans drums are constructed one by one, shaped by a series of hammers. Notes are then chiseled in with a blunt punch and are raised to create a vibrating surface. The drum is then burned on an open fire to temper the steel. Notes are stretched or relaxed in specific ways so that the notes resonate with their designated pitches or sounds. The drum is then painted in traditional Caribbean colors. Mini Pans are made with a 14" diameter, 16-gallon barrel and are available in the keys of C, G, and the pentatonic scale. Also available is the fully Chromatic Double Set made up of two complete mini-pans. The perfect entry-level instrument. These great sounding pans include a table top stand and playing mallets.

  • Having fun with Fancy Pans 16G
  • February 15, 2013

First a couple of disclaimers: Musical talent is not one of my strong points, I bought the Fancy Pans 16G strictly for fun. Also I have never owned a steel drum before, so I don't have anything to compare it to. Having said that, the Fancy Pans 16G has met all of my expectations and I'm having lots of fun learning songs. It seems very well made and it has a nice tone. (Amazingly enough it doesn't drive my wife crazy) The stand while not much to look at is very sturdy and functional. and the mallets are of good quality. I bought the key of G version so that I could use the Jumbie Jam play along music book/CD's. I bought the "Island Fun #1" book and I was able to learn a song well enough to play along with the CD on day 1. One observation: the higher pitch notes require progressively harder hits in order to create the same level of volume. Maybe this is to be expected? I read a lot of reviews before making my purchase, and I'm glad I spent a little extra money and bought a steel drum that is a step up from a toy. The only down side was that it drop ships from the manufacturer and it had a 4 week delivery time.
