Evans EC1 heads are the most durable single-ply snare head available and are a favorite among players seeking a single-ply feel with double-ply durability. The newest addition to the EC1 line is the EC1 Reverse Dot Snare head. The patch produces a focused and attack heavy center for fat backbeats, while the perimeter of the patch produces an articulate, but sensitive response for playing ghost notes.

I have been experimenting with both Remo and Evans heads on my DW drum sets. I currently have a DW Collectors Cherry kit. I also have the good fortune to own a DW Sabian Vault Edge snare drum, one of only 50 that were ever made. The edge snakes have heady metal rings that act as the bearing edges for both top and bottom heads. Just like I've experimented with different heads for my toms and bass drum, I have done so for the snares I own. I was intrigued by the single ply of this head. Also, while most descriptions and reviews of this head do not describe this aspect of the head, the mylar is translucent and etched. This attribute intrigued me. It has dampening rings around the perimeter, and a silver dot on the central underside of head. It has a very unique appearance. But what does it sound like? Up to this point, my favorite head for this snare drum had been an Evans coated Power Center Reverse Dot, which I really liked. Would I like this new one better? The answer is yes. Make sure you realize this review is of the EC1 head; there is an EC Reverse Dot head as well, which is a two ply head...this review is of the single ply head. I love this head. It has a very wide variation of tone, depending upon where you strike it. IF you hit it on the center dot, it sounds similar to the Power Center Reverse Dot head, which is a solid tone with many overtones. With the EC1 head, f you strike it off the center dot, on the etched mylar, you get significantly more overtones, a beautiful ringing tone. Fabulous tone. And a very solid 'feel', great rebound. In my opinion, while I am not an accomplished brush player, the texture of this head is perfect for brushes, and appears to be resistant to any peeling of the texture, since it is etched, not coated. This head has a great sound. My guess is that many 'traditional' players might be put off by the avant-guard looks of this head, very different than a a 'normal' white coated head. I would very much recommend that you give this head a try. It gives my edge drum great overtones, with different sounds at different spots on the head. Highly recommended!
