Silk swabs have the advantage of passing through smaller holes than do cotton swabs.  That enables a single swab to be useful for both the boot joint and the wing joint.  It also provides a reduced chance of the swab getting stuck.  While it is arguable that cotton swabs are more effective at removing moisture, the advantage of being able to use only a single silk swab appeals to many.
