In this price range, I'd say this Yamaha DTX502 is a great option if you're looking for a fairly inexpensive sound module. I've compared quite a few in person and this is my favorite under $400 or so. The sounds in this are very rich compared to other options at this price. It has a lot of built-in kits - some are maybe niche-types of kits that are fun once in a while, but there are many that could be used for certain live and recording situations very well. It is easy to trigger sounds from this because it has individual inputs, which isn't the case with most current Roland modules. It takes a little getting used to customizing sounds, but the manual goes through all of that in a pretty thorough manner. In terms of "bang for the buck", I'm not sure you can beat this.
