The Meinl B20SAR Byzance 20" Benny Greb Signature Jazz Sand Ride Cymbal features a sandblasted top combined with a partially lathed bottom to produce an outstanding dry and fast stick sound with a very quick decay. The bell has a clear, bright and articulate voice. It has the beautiful light wash and stick sound of a thinner cymbal and the clear bell of a heavier cymbal. It has been aged through a special procedure where the surface of the cymbal is sandblasted to give more vintage warmth, dryness and a fantastic look. It has superhuman, modern abilities with that great vintage sound...unreal!

Yes, the warp in the sand ride is there on purpose. It's a crucial part of its sound. Benny Greb Signature Sand Ride Cymbals are made with a special lathing process. Since the sand ride is handmade, some cymbals have a more distinct warp, others less. Benny himself has given a guideline as to how much warp is acceptable for his cymbal. Benny's guideline has been applied to all sand rides Meinl has made so far.

There is a lot to like about the Greb Sand Ride. If you like dark, shimmery rides, this may be a good option. The bow has nice wash, the bell is good (for a thinner cymbal), and edge crashes extremely well. It is very versatile for darker tones. So sound-wise, it's all good in my opinion. There are a couple of downsides though. It seems to be a bit off-balance; hammered rides are often slightly off, but this even sounds slightly thicker on one side. Also, you can't clean fingerprints/stick marks off of this cymbal. It would be nice if Meinl would be able to apply some type of clear coat to this. Overall though, sound being most important, it's definitely worth consideration.
