The Vic Firth SD5 is great for any type of venue as long as you're mic'd. No need if you're playing a small restaurant or something similar. The drums sound a little more refined is the way I would describe it. I sometimes use a VF Erskine signature in left hand if need a bigger cross stick or snare while riding with the SD5. I usually go bigger if I'm playing a festival or bigger venue though as I try to groove a little bigger & fatter & sparser when I'm in those situations. You can pull some delicate cymbal sounds out and play blazing fast. Granted with the right touch you can do most of that with lots of different sizes. All the Firth stuff is top notch although I do use the Vater Manhattan 7A on occasion. I've been playing these for a while and my only recommendation is to play a variety of sticks so you're not continually used to the light weight of these.
