The Shure SM58® unidirectional (cardioid) dynamic vocal microphone is designed for professional vocal use in live performance, sound reinforcement, and studio recording. It has a tailored vocal response for a sound which is a world standard for singing or speech. A highly effective, built-in spherical filter minimizes wind and breath "pop" noise. A cardioid pickup pattern isolates the main sound source while minimizing unwanted background noise.

This thing can do just about anything on a live stage, especially in a pinch. I've used them on vocalists, horns, some drums (no kick!) when I was in a bind, and for amplifiers also. It wasn't designed with studio applications in mind so I'm not even concerned about that; I just love a rugged do-all stage microphone that lasts forever and this is the one!

I can't remember the last time that I played a show, and didn't sing into one of these. They're predictable, reliable, and basically the industry standard for live vocals. Great for quick demo work at home, too. They even pick up percussion and accordion pretty darn well, too!

Sure, it's durable and rugged, and that is definitely worth a lot. There are many other $100 mics out there, however, that have better response. Buy one or two to have in your kit, but don't limit yourself.
