Just received the new Carl Palmer Venus Snare and am quite impressed. Had the good opportunity to see Carl at the Detroit Jazz Café and hear his new Venus snare up close and personal…and led me to order one from Interstate.
Pros: First off it is a gorgeous looking snare. The green lacquer over brass shell with brass tube lugs and die-cast hoops is quite striking and Carl Palmer’s personally signed autograph inside the drum really adds to this class snare. The sound is very precise and focused as expected with a 4 x 14 shell, and with a bit heavier head (I replaced the factory head right off with a Remo Suede 12mil head) gives a good mix of body and attack. The Venus truly is a “players” drum because it is so articulate; your chops need to be up as this snare will not hide anything. Finally the price is great and quite a bargain.
Cons, really are subjective, the heads supplied with the drum, (to me), were barely adequate at best and though the snares were ok, I replaced them with a nice set of puresound snares. Getting picky, The snare gate cut out on the bottom hoop is a bit off center from the butt plate and throw-off due to the factory not lining up the off-set tube lugs quite right, (just aesthetics, as this does not affect the sound or the throw off operation at all) The shell is not a spun one piece shell but is rolled and welded seam construction. Of course that fact and that the drum is manufactured in Taiwan keeps the price low.
Overall the Carl Palmer Venus is one great looking and sounding drum, and I am very proud to own and play one.
